Looking backwards so that I can look forward

December 29, 2011

I went through a phase of rounding up each year with a list of all the wonderful things that I had done, people I had spent time with, places that I had visited and brilliant food that I had eaten. I stopped a couple of years ago, but I think it’s something which I really need to keep doing – maybe even extending to a monthly roundup. It’s important to stop and breath and be mindful. Remember what brilliant things you’ve achieved, and look back at excellent memories.
At New Years Eve last year I stood on the coast on the South of England. I looked out at the glittering sea; navy, dark black depths and the sky filled with lanterns. I made a wish; this year would be different. This year I would make things happen, make the changes that I needed to make, and to be happy.
I’m not going to sugarcoat it or elaborate, but this year has been hard, and it’s quite difficult for me to recall the positives. But I am going to try:

– Having my writing published in Chickpea Magazine
– Volunteering with the soup-run
– All the wonderful people that I’ve met on and offline
– Holiday in Greece with Mr T

– Seeing Sylvia Plath’s drawings, and words
– Going to the best wedding EVER
– Visiting Slloyd in Bristol
– Sleepovers at Phil’s house
– Going to Disneyland, Paris

– My sister getting engaged ♥
– Having a birthday party for my cat, Rasputin
– Watching Whitehawk with sparklers
– Cycling round Lewes with Slloyd
– Starting Paperbagblog
– Seeing Bouncing Souls live, twice in one day
– Visits from Laia <3
– Spending time with friends ♥

– Spotting Carluccio having lunch at Carluccio’s
– Dinner with lots of happy vegans, which involved sushi (= ♥)
– All the games of Bananagrams
– Mexican party in the Bottage
– Road-trip to Calais for BOOZE CRUISE!
– Gypsy Birthday Party

I’m 100% sure that I’ve missed many eventful nights, meals, weekends and moments but these are what have come to mind tonight. Further to these memories, special commendation to the amazing food that I’ve eaten in 2011:

(Top to Bottom: Cauliflower Falafel, Oatmeal Raisin Carrot Cake Balls, Marshmallow Squares, Iydea, Raspberry and Vanilla Torte,  Dosa and Pizzaface.)

– I learnt a few things this year, but maybe one of the best has been that breakfast really is a brilliant part of the day:

Things to look forward to in 2012:

– 10 year Anniversary in March ♥

– B E R L I N
– Visiting Laia in Barcelona
– America road-trip in the fall
– Seeing Peter Andre in December!

Wishes for 2012:

– Do something creative everyday
– Spend money doing things I enjoy
– Enjoy my time off; it’s OK to do nothing every so often
– Buy more nice things for the house
– Spend more time visiting friends & family
Don’t put things off
– Concentrate on my writing
– Bake things from all the brilliant cookbooks that I ignore
– Have a Kingston day soon <3
– Save money for travelling
– Be inspired by cooking again; experiment, try new things, don’t be overwhelmed
– To be mindful and appreciate each moment – don’t look forward too far ahead and don’t dwell on the past
– Write more letters, send more notes, post more parcels
– Step outside of my comfort zone and push myself more
– To order something yummy from Hannah Banana Bakery!

I hope everyone has something lovely planned for New Years Eve – and if not, enjoy the last few minutes relaxing at home. Make New Years Resolutions, really they do help. I hope that you all had a lovely Christmas and I wish you all the best for 2012! Thanks to all my lovely readers, the people that comment, the people that send messages and emails. Thank you ♥
