Wholesome suppers and a cat that loves suitcases

November 24, 2014

I’m off to Barcelona shortly, wahoo! I really can’t wait, even though the weather forecast says it will rain – so unfair! It’s never rained when I’ve been there before in November! Either way, I can’t wait to see Laia.

Last night I made us a little dinner, and it was kind of a perfect afternoon and evening. I made a hearty meal of shepherds pie followed by rice pudding, Trout let me listen to my Peter Andre’s Love Songs CD, I caught up with Made in Chelsea and we had a relaxing evening together catching up with Masterchef and Parks & Recreation. I’ll always have a soft spot for comfort food like roast dinners, shepherds pie and other fairly ‘British’ meals. I felt like a proper housewife cooking.

I’ve never made rice pudding before – in fact I think the only time I ever tried it was at David Bann, a fantastic veggie restaurant in Edinburgh. I decided to give it a go myself, and made a white chocolate rice pudding infused with orange peel. Totally did that on purpose, and definitely did not get confused between grating and zesting an orange. Nope.

It was really good, even if I do say so myself! I combined the ingredients in this recipe, with the method in this recipe. I’ve never even heard of a baked rice pudding, and kind of have an aversion to cooking anything in the oven that takes longer than an hour. Pretty sure it’s not worth it, and also costs a lot to have the oven on for that long.

Ras is in heaven this morning. He absolutely loves suitcases, and as soon as you even bring it out of the cupboard he’s trying to get on/in. I hate leaving these two boys, but it’s only for a few days and makes it even more special when we’re back from our travels. While I’m in Barcelona Laia and I are doing a dinner tour of her family and friends, which I’m so looking forward to. It will be so nice to catch up with everyone and eat some home-cooked food. Plus I can’t wait to eat at Gopal! It’s such a nice cafe, with loads of awesome treats like burgers and donuts. I’m sure I’ll be Instagramming along the way, but otherwise I will mostly be switching off from social media. See you in a few days, have a great week everyone!

I have never made rice pudding, but i’ve had it once and I think I liked it. It was a long time ago. Ras just gets more and more adorable with each picture! My cat just gets sad when she sees suitcases.
